Glaucoma testing and OCT in Surrey.

Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it usually has no early symptoms. We screen for it as part of every comprehensive exam, with OCT retinal imaging included at no extra charge, so changes are caught early. Inside Specsavers Guildford Town Centre.

The silent one

Why glaucoma is easy to miss.

Glaucoma is gradual damage to the optic nerve, often linked to pressure inside the eye. It usually starts at the edges of your vision and progresses so slowly that most people do not notice until a lot of sight has been lost, and that loss cannot be reversed.

That is why screening matters. When we catch glaucoma early, it can be managed well to protect the vision you have.

How we test

What glaucoma screening includes.

OCT retinal imaging

A detailed scan of the optic nerve and retina, included at no extra charge, that can reveal changes years before you would notice symptoms.

Eye pressure check

We measure the pressure inside your eyes, one of the key signs we monitor for glaucoma risk.

Optic nerve exam

We examine the optic nerve closely for the early structural changes that glaucoma causes.

Visual field testing

When needed, we test your side vision to map any early loss and track it over time.

Who is at risk

When to be screened.

Risk goes up with age, a family history of glaucoma, higher levels of nearsightedness, and conditions like diabetes. If any of these apply to you, regular screening is especially important.

If you are nearsighted, see our myopia information, and if you have diabetes, a diabetic eye exam checks the retina at the same time. A comprehensive adult exam is $99 with OCT included, and a full exam is covered yearly by MSP for children 18 and under and seniors 65 and over.

Frequently asked questions

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Most glaucoma has no early symptoms at all. It slowly affects side vision first and is usually not noticed until significant sight is lost, which is why regular screening with imaging is so important.

How is glaucoma detected?

We screen for glaucoma with OCT imaging of the optic nerve, an eye pressure check, a close look at the optic nerve, and visual field testing when needed. Together these catch changes early, before you would notice them.

Is OCT included in the exam?

Yes. OCT retinal imaging is included at no extra charge in every comprehensive eye exam at our clinic. It helps us catch glaucoma and other conditions years before symptoms appear.

Who is most at risk for glaucoma?

Risk increases with age, a family history of glaucoma, higher amounts of nearsightedness, and conditions such as diabetes. If any of these apply to you, regular screening is especially worthwhile.
